INFORMATION FOR NEWCOMERS

New to the Faroe Island

We would like to extend you a warm welcome to Sjóvar kommuna.

Our municipality offers a wide range of activities for both children, youth, adults, and senior citizens.

You will find our reception in the municipal office (kommunuskrivstova). If you have any queries to the town council you are welcome to visit the office or give us a call on tel. 47 27 27.

Moving to a new country can be exciting and enriching, but can also be challenging at times. It is not always easy to know who to contact for advice or guidance.

On the website Integration (integration.fo/newcomers), you will find more information on different topics that can be relevant for newcomers, including a direct link where you can ask for advice and guidance in relation to practical matters. You can also ask for an integration consultation with the Integration Officer, where you will discuss your personal background including where you are from, your educational level and work experiences, family situation and interests, and your plans in the Faroes.

For more information, please contact the Immigration Office (Útlendingastovan):

The municipality offers care facilities to children from infancy until they finish second grade of primary school. Sjóvar kommuna offers a nursery (vøggustova), a kindergarten (barnagarður) and a children’s recreation centre (frítíðarstova).

Preparatory school (skúlabólkur)

Lítlifløttur also arranges a preparatory school for the children before entering first year of primary school, which is supervised by two educators and two teacher. The children attend preparatory school Mondays to Fridays from 10 am - 12.30 pm.

Children’s recreation centre (frítíðarstova)

Healthcare

Once you have registered with the municipal authorities and have received a p-number, you are included in the general Faroese health insurance scheme. The Faroese Social Security Office (Heilsutrygd) will send a letter to your registered address where they appoint a general practitioner to you.

You should contact your general practitioner in the case of illness, and if you need prescription medication, vaccinations, contraception and other regular healthcare services. If you need to be treated at an accident and emergency department (A&E) or receive hospital or specialist treatment, you will usually need a referral from your general practitioner.

You will need to make an appointment before seeing your general practitioner.

If you become ill or suffer an injury outside your own general practitioner’s regular opening hours, you can call the out-of-hours medical service at 1870.

If you suffer an urgent or life-threatening illness or injury, you should call the national emergency services at 112.

If you don’t speak Faroese, you are entitled to have a professional interpreter present or through the phone if the doctor deems this necessary for the consultation.

Dental care

If you are covered by the national health insurance (Heilsutrygd), it will automatically subsidise part of your cost for dental treatment as an adult.

You are free to choose any dentist that receives new patients. The dentist will ascribe your check-up appointments at regular intervals. The local dentis is in Skála, "Tannfegin - Tannlæknastovan á Skála" tlf 441272

Children and adolescents under the age of 18 receive free dental treatment. Children will often receive regular check-ups through the public-school system.

Emergency dental care for adults: call +298 31 45 44.

Please note that emergency consultations for adults are much more expensive than dental care provided during regular opening hours.
